Hi Church and welcome to today’s devotion
My name is Darren one of the pastors at Audacious Church and we are at the start of our 21 days of prayer and fasting
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?” — Isaiah 58:6
“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” — Matthew 6:17-18
Fasting is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines a believer can practice. It is more than just abstaining from food— it’s a powerful act of surrender, a spiritual reset; it is a divine invitation to draw closer to God, to seek His presence, and to experience breakthrough. In a world full of distractions, fasting helps us quiet the noise, realign our hearts, and refocus on what truly matters.
When we fast, we declare that our dependence is on God, not on food, entertainment, or anything else that satisfies temporarily. Fasting humbles us, deepens our prayer life, and makes us more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is a way of saying, “Lord, You are my greatest need.”
When we fast, we declare that God is our source. Fasting is an intentional act of discipline that strengthens our spirit and weakens the grip of worldly desires. It humbles us, aligns our hearts with God’s will, and positions us to receive His wisdom and direction.
Throughout Scripture, we see how fasting led to supernatural intervention. Jesus fasted for 40 days before beginning His public ministry, showing us that fasting prepares us for greater things (Matthew 4:2). Esther called for a national fast before stepping into the presence of the king, and her people were saved (Esther 4:16). Daniel fasted, and God gave him divine revelation (Daniel 10:2-3).
Maybe you need clarity, breakthrough, or a deeper connection with God. Maybe you’ve felt spiritually dry and distant. Fasting is an invitation to realign your heart with His. It is not about earning God’s favor, but about making room for His presence. Are you in need of direction? A breakthrough? Healing? Deliverance? Fasting positions you to receive what God has already prepared. When we fast with the right heart—not as a religious duty, but as an act of surrender—we invite God’s power into our lives.
Isaiah 58 reminds us that the kind of fasting God desires is not just about personal growth, but about setting others free, lifting burdens, and bringing justice. True fasting changes us so that we can bring change to the world around us.
As you fast, seek Him with an expectant heart. He promises to reward those who seek Him in secret. Your breakthrough, healing, and fresh revelation may be just on the other side of your surrender.
If you’ve never fasted before, start small. Give up one meal. Check out our web page www.audaciouschurch.com/21days for everything you need to know about fasting. As you fast, replace that time with prayer and Scripture. Watch as your hunger for God grows and His presence fills your life in ways you never imagined.
Prayer: Father, I desire to know You more. Help me to fast with the right heart—not just to receive something, but to draw closer to You. Strengthen me in this journey, and may Your power be revealed in my life. Lord, help me embrace fasting as a way to grow closer to You. Strengthen me as I seek You, and let Your presence fill every area of my life. Amen.
